The Opportunity: Volunteer Services Coordinator
The Humane Society of Boulder Valley (HSBV) is seeking a Volunteer Services Coordinator to support the administration of the organization’s volunteer programs. Volunteers are at the heart of what we do and are critical to our mission and supporting the animals in our care. The coordinator helps ensure our volunteer programs provide a meaningful experience for the volunteers and enable the organization to meet the animal needs of the community. The coordinator focuses their effort on volunteer recruiting, volunteer placement, training, scheduling, and daily support of department operations. The coordinator is also responsible for maintaining volunteer information and their status in our volunteer database, Better Impact. The coordinator helps plan, organize and attends volunteer engagement events and assists with planning for volunteer support of annual events such as our gala event, Puttin’ On The Leash.
The Volunteer Services Coordinator position is considered full-time, non-seasonal, is non-exempt, non-seasonal, and scheduled 40 hours per week. We will also consider candidates who are available to work 30 hours per week and those with flexible schedules who may be open to job-sharing. The coordinator reports directly to the Volunteer Services Manager and will also work closely with other HSBV department managers, supervisors, and staff to meet the organization’s volunteer needs. What We Offer – The anticipated pay rate for this position is $18.00 – $22.00 per hour. There is an additional $2.00 per hour paid for weekend hours worked. This pay range is the Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s best estimate for this role and actual compensation will be based on factors including but not limited to the depth and extent of relevant experience, additional training/certifications for preferred skills, and education. Summary of Responsibilities
Volunteer Recruitment, Onboarding, and Education
- Provides required volunteer training courses or schedules leadership volunteers to present those trainings. Ensures all volunteer trainings are current and meet the needs for each program.
- Coordinates the entry of new volunteer applicants into HSBV’s volunteer program including reviewing profiles, screening, interviewing, training, scheduling, and occasional redirection of volunteers. Provides similar support for transitioning current volunteers into other departmental volunteer programs.
- Works with the Volunteer Services Manager and other departments to coordinate and supervise corporate group service projects.
- Responds daily to potential and current volunteer requests and to public inquiries via phone and email.
- Provides daily onsite support, training, and coaching to volunteers. Engages in encouraging conversations with volunteers to ensure tasks are being completed correctly and safely.
Program Support and Administration
- Collaborates with and supports managers and leads in other departments to ensure effective communication and oversight of their volunteer programs and directly supports the animal care staff with their supervision of Animal Care Team volunteers.
- Fulfills administrative support needs of the volunteer department by completing tasks such as data entry in the volunteer database, maintaining the volunteer website webpages, assisting with data collection, and reporting, and maintaining supplies needed by the general volunteer population and to meet program needs.
Events and Organizational Support
- Participates in fundraising events by providing administrative support and onsite supervision of volunteers at events.
- Assists with planning and support of volunteer recognition activities and educational opportunities for volunteers.
- Serves as HSBV liaison with volunteers, volunteer groups, clients, and employees.

Qualifications – High School Diploma or equivalent experience. One year of customer service experience or working with the general public required. Prior experience working closely with volunteers in a professional environment strongly preferred. We will also consider any combination of experience and education that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Spanish/English speaking individuals encouraged to apply. HSBV requires background and drug screening of employment candidates who have not already met this requirement.
Knowledge & Skills – Intermediate computer skills in a Windows environment or using Microsoft Office and Outlook required. Database management and data entry experience a plus. Excellent verbal communication required, negotiation and conflict resolution skills desired. Must work well with a diverse group of people. Detail oriented and ability to multitask in a dynamic environment necessary. Exercises good judgment when addressing concerns involving volunteers, animal-related issues, or involving confidential information. Experience with safe animal handling preferred. Must be willing and able to support and effectively communicate HSBV euthanasia policies and decisions. Must be willing to complete qualified accident investigator training within 6 months from the date of hire.
Working Conditions – Work is performed in an animal kennel environment and a shared office environment. Exposure to cleaning agents when in kennel area. Exposure to animals at all times. Subject to animal bites and scratches. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds with assistance. Standing/walking/bending/lifting/squatting, kneeling for 8-10 hours on occasion. Able to sit at a desk and use the computer keyboard for most work shifts. Schedule flexibility is a requirement of this position; availability to work the Saturday shift is strongly preferred. Evening, weekend, and holiday hours are regularly required.
