Expert witnesses are an essential component of animal cruelty cases. They assist investigators, prosecutors, animal protection agents, judges and, jurors in understanding what transpired, and the resulting pain and suffering endured by the victim animal. This session will cover the who, what, when, why and how of expert testimony. Who can testify or consult as an expert? What can they testify about? When and why should they be allowed to testify? And, how can they skillfully share their knowledge and experience? Additionally, there will be tips about how to best prepare for testifying and what pitfalls to avoid.

Diane Balkin

Diane Balkin received her J.D. from the University of Denver College of Law. She was a trial attorney for the Denver District Attorney for 32 years. She prosecuted all types of crimes including all crimes against animals. Balkin trains and consults on a local and national level on the investigation, prosecution, and fair resolution of animal cruelty cases.
