Under general supervision, patrols community streets and performs animal control functions for the city of Thornton.

Patrols streets in marked, radio-equipped vehicle fitted with animal cages. Responds to calls for services such as nuisance and animal cruelty complaints. May handle injured or deceased wild animals. Transports animals to shelter. Catches, contains, and impounds animals-at-large including sick, injured, and vicious animals using specialized equipment, such as catch poles, leashes, asps, dart guns, cages, and traps. Cares for animals appropriately; performs euthanasia on sick or injured animals. Vaccinates animals. Picks up and disposes of dead animals. Protects self and safeguards the public from dangerous animals. Provides animal control and related information to the public. Conducts presentations at schools to educate children on animal care and behavior. Documents situations and actions taken by issuing courtesy notices. Writes reports, takes photographs, and sends certified notices or corrective orders. Notifies animal owners or involved parties of violations and corrective actions required. Follows up on cases; prepares and serves summonses; testifies in court. Performs routine upkeep on assigned vehicle. Performs routine upkeep on building kennel area. May be required to work overtime. May work a varying schedule and/or shift. Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED; one year experience working with animals; one year of customer service experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Valid Colorado driver’s license with a safe driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of Colorado Revised Statutes and Thornton Municipal Code relating to animal control.
Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.
Knowledge of animal control techniques and practices, such as patrolling, animal catching and trapping, animal care, euthanasia, court procedures, community relations, report preparation, and animal custody.
Knowledge of equipment used in animal control, including catch poles, leashes, asps, dart guns, cages, traps, communications equipment and automotive equipment.
Knowledge of typical animal breeds and identifying characteristics.
Skill in properly catching, controlling, containing, and transporting animals.
Skill in properly caring for sick or injured animals.
Skill in utilizing animal control equipment.
Ability to successfully complete all medical and fit testing as required for the use of personal protective respiratory equipment.
Ability to wear SCBA gear and/or respiratory protection.
Ability to patrol neighborhoods and identify animal code violations.
Ability to issue notices and orders based on violations of City animal control ordinances.
Ability to testify in court.
Ability to prepare reports and document activities and cases.
Ability to determine appropriate methods to control animals and safeguard self and the public from dangerous animals.
Ability to interpret, understand, and follow municipal ordinances, regulations and standards.
Ability to communicate effectively using a two-way radio.
Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences.
Ability to use standard office equipment, personal computer and job-related computer applications including electronic mail.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, law enforcement agencies, legal staff, community members and the general public.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to balance, sit, reach, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift up to 50 lbs., twist, demonstrate manual dexterity, grasp, talk, hear, and see. The employee sometimes is required to stand, run, push and pull. The employee is required to comply with all physical requirements of SCBA and/or any other respiratory protection equipment including passing all medical and fit testing. The employee is required to remain calm during stressful situations.
