About the Role
As the Animal Care Supervisor, you will lead and support a dedicated team responsible for the daily care and well-being of animals in our shelter. You’ll ensure high standards of animal care, efficient operations, and a culture rooted in compassion and respect-for both animals and people.

This is a hands-on leadership position where you’ll be actively engaged on the floor, coaching staff, solving problems, and ensuring every animal receives the care they deserve.

What You’ll Do
Lead Animal Care Operations
Supervise daily animal care activities, ensuring consistent, high-quality standards
Monitor workflow across all animal care areas to maintain efficiency and effectiveness
Ensure proper feeding, cleaning, sanitation, and population movement
Maintain accurate animal records and daily inventory checks
Oversee supply management, cleanliness, and organization of all care areas

Provide Compassionate Care
Serve as the Euthanasia Lead, ensuring humane, respectful end-of-life care
Train and mentor staff on euthanasia procedures and controlled substance protocols
Make thoughtful, humane decisions that prioritize animal welfare and dignity

Supervise, Train & Support Staff
Lead, coach, and develop a team of up to 13 employees
Train new staff and volunteers, ensuring alignment with protocols and best practices
Conduct regular 1:1 meetings, performance feedback, and team trainings
Review timecards, schedules, and daily task completion

Foster Strong Relationships
Promote open communication and collaboration across staff, volunteers, and leadership
Address concerns with professionalism, empathy, and sound judgment
Serve as a key liaison for volunteers, providing guidance and support

Communicate & Collaborate
Keep leadership informed of department updates, challenges, and opportunities
Document concerns and ensure appropriate follow-up
Partner with internal teams, including Philanthropy, to share impactful animal stories

Ensure Safety & Compliance
Maintain a safe working environment for people and animals
Model and enforce safety protocols and best practices
Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements

What You Bring
High school diploma or equivalent
1+ year of animal care experience (shelter, veterinary, or similar environment preferred)
1+ year of supervisory experience preferred
Strong animal handling skills and comfort working with animals of all sizes and temperaments
Ability to obtain Euthanasia by Injection (EBI) certification within 12 months
Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving abilities
Proficiency in Microsoft Office; shelter software experience (e.g., Chameleon) a plus
Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This is an active, physically demanding role that requires:

Lifting 50+ pounds regularly
Standing, walking, bending, and handling animals for extended periods
Working with a variety of species, including those with medical or behavioral challenges
Exposure to animal allergens, zoonotic diseases, cleaning agents, and varying environmental conditions

Schedule
Varies – will include at least one regular weekend shift on a regular basis
Includes evenings, weekends, and holidays

Pay range:  $19.75-22.00/hour depending on experience
