The Director of Veterinary Services provides leadership, direction, and oversight of all Veterinary Services programs of all HSPPR locations, including veterinary clinics, shelter medicine, and community wellness clinics.  Responsible for implementing veterinary service-related initiatives in the strategic plan for the organization, promoting the growth of public-facing programs and services.  Routinely coordinates with other HSPPR Directors, managers, and staff.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Oversees and directs Veterinary Clinics, Community Wellness Clinics and Hospitals in Colorado Springs and Pueblo to ensure efficient and effective operations with all programs, including public veterinary services, shelter medicine, community cats, emergencies, and medical cases.

·          Participates as a member of the senior leadership team in setting direction and strategy for the organization.

·         Oversees and directs Community Wellness Clinics utilizing the mobile hospital unit in Colorado Springs and Pueblo and the Pueblo Wellness Clinic.

·         Responsible for grant-related reports and tenant relationships with PetSmart and PetSmart Charities related to the Pueblo Wellness clinic.

·         Administrator of the HSPPR veterinary internship program, when applicable.

·         Manages additional contract veterinarians as needed.

·         Works closely with the Philanthropy & Communications team to support capital campaign fundraising, donor events, tours, presentations, and other development initiatives involving veterinary services components.

·         Oversees and directs all requirements and standards to maintain the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) clinic accreditation in Colorado Springs.

·         Supports staff who manage the medical animal population and makes decisions about treatment plans by evaluating veterinarian recommendations, staffing, and shelter resources.

·         Oversees the medical supply inventory, including negotiating supply contracts, pricing agreements, and controlled substance regulation and management.

·         Directs quality animal and people care by overseeing the development of shelter medicine & surgery protocols and customer care processes.

·         Oversees the administration of externship programs for multiple veterinary technician/assistant programs.

·         Oversees the integration of volunteers in veterinary services division functions.

·         Oversees and supports managers in developing and monitoring department budgets to meet expectations related to expenses and revenues.

·         Develops, fosters, and maintains business and collaborative relationships with private veterinary clinics to support department functions and HSPPR’s strategic goals and mission.

·         Facilitate an environment of compassionate support to pets and pet owners.

 

Supervisor duties:

 

·         Recruits, supervises, and evaluates direct reports in the performance of their job responsibilities.

·         Coaches staff by providing ongoing feedback and timely performance evaluations.

·         Sets performance standards and expectations.

·         Investigates grievances and performs disciplinary action when necessary.

·         Consults with Vice President of Operations regarding discipline and terminations.

·         Supervises and provides guidance to staff for situations that require immediate problem-solving.

·         Directs, motivates, and develops direct reports, ensuring effective teamwork and high standards of work quality.

·         Cultivate strong problem-solving skills among staff, including solving problems quickly and creatively.

·         Coordinates with managers and supervisors to assure proper workforce planning.

·         Supports staff and volunteers, recognizing their individual contributions to the success of our organization.

·         Provides recommendations of policy/procedural changes for departments and works with managers/supervisors to ensure the implementation of those policy/procedural changes.

·         Works with Managers to forecast and determine future capital equipment, staffing, and programmatic needs and develops annual budgets.

Staff Management
·         Utilizes performance-based management when counseling and evaluating staff and sets measurable goals for employee growth.

·         Submits evaluations on time and encourages continuing education for staff as it relates to the organization’s needs.

·         Recognizes good performance and counsels staff to correct problems.

·         Regularly meets with direct reports and sets the same expectation for all Managers and Supervisors.

Availability
·         Is flexible with scheduling and is available when away from the facility as needed to meet the organization’s needs.

Physical Demands

·         Regularly sits at a computer station, often in a shared office environment.

·         The employee must regularly lift and move 25 or more pounds of shifting weight and occasionally lift and move up to 40 or more pounds of shifting weight.

·         May be occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.

Regularly required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, hear, and is frequently required to stand and walk.  They may be expected to be on their feet for extended periods.
Consistently exposed to animals in the workplace and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available.
·         Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Regularly exposed to noise and potential exposure to hazardous weather conditions.
Potential exposure to cleaning supplies and other substances containing toxic or caustic chemicals.

Schedule Requirements

Schedule may include weekend, evening and holiday work.

Education/Experience Necessary

·         Bachelor’s degree in a related field, with seven (7) years of professional experience in animal welfare, including at least three (3) years of management of veterinary services functions or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

·         Advanced management and leadership experience in a veterinary hospital or shelter clinic setting, including prior experience supervising veterinarians.

·         Certified Veterinary Practice Manager and Certified Veterinary Technician, or equivalent, preferred.

·         In-depth knowledge of animal welfare and veterinary industry best practices.

·         Proven ability to effectively lead and manage change in teams, departments, and groups.

·         Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent leadership skills and experience in motivating and developing emerging leaders are necessary.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
