“Paraphilia: A Case Study in Animal Crushing” examines the investigation of animal crushing crimes, emphasizing their link to broader paraphilic behaviors and human violence. It highlights legislative efforts like the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture Act (PACT) and provides a detailed case study involving social media evidence, investigative hurdles, and offender profiling. Key themes include the challenges of proving obscenity under current legal standards, managing digital evidence, utilizing sources, and organizing operations. The case highlights how these complex crime can be prosecuted using sound investigative strategies.

Det. Jeremy Hoffman

Jeremy Hoffman is a detective with the Fairfax County Police Department, in northern Virginia, and president of J. Hoffman Consulting LLC. Most of Detective Hoffman’s 24 years in law enforcement have been spent in major case investigations where he has worked in various assignments, to include child exploitation, robbery, cold case homicide, and overdose death investigations. Today, Detective Hoffman serves as a detective in the Criminal Intelligence Unit and as a federal task force officer with the ATF. Detective Hoffman has a unique background in investigating extreme cases of animal cruelty and sexual abuse. Detective Hoffman has twice testified before legislative committees to advance animals sexual abuse legislation and has presented his case studies and investigative experiences to law enforcement officers across the country.
