Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
The Animal Control Specialist should be able to articulate case facts in a succinct and clear fashion. Effective verbal and written communication skills, while paying attention to detail, should be considered a priority. He/she must be willing to demonstrate a decisive and independent attitude during efforts to initiate and conclude case investigations. This attitude should be tempered with acknowledgement of case facts and evidence at hand. He/she must work within the accepted parameters of approved department practices, withstand the stresses of confrontation, and express an active interest in the performance of the duties as noted. He/she must demonstrate interpersonal, problem solving and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to deal tactfully with the public. He/she should have some understanding of animal behavior; long-term interaction with animals is preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS:
21 years of age with valid driver’s license. Applicant must successfully pass a complete and thorough application and background investigation, written test, polygraph, and psychological exam, physical and drug screen.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent. Experience with animal behavior is preferred. College or additional education is desirable.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Enforces state laws involving animals. When taking enforcement action, asks for assistance from Patrol Deputies as needed.
2. Enforces county resolutions, Town of Lyons and Town of Superior ordinances involving animals.
3. Initiates and follows-up on investigations involving state law, county resolution, and town ordinance violations.
4. Must be commissioned by the Colorado Bureau of Animal Protection and pass the certification test of the Colorado Association of Animal Control Officers or AWAC within two years.
5. Capture, control, and impound domestic animals. Controlled drugs may be used for chemical capture via a tranquilizer gun.
6. Capture, control, and possibly euthanize diseased and/or critically injured wild animals with controlled drugs or a rifle.
7. Must be willing to transport animal carcasses for disposal, veterinary diagnostics, or zoonotic testing.
