Job Summary:

To assist with the management of daily operations for the shelter in accordance with Journey Home Animal Care Center’s By Laws and guidelines. The shelter manager assures that the shelter philosophy and mission are relevant and practiced throughout the organization and present Journey Home Animal Care Center to the public with the highest level of professionalism. The shelter manager is responsible for supervising or performing all aspects of animal care and kennel operations. This includes admissions, adoptions and euthanasia. The shelter manager will be responsible for providing operational reports to the Director. The shelter manager is responsible for supervising, training and providing support for the Kennel technicians, spay and neuter trailer and volunteers/fosters.

 

Working Environment:

Work is performed in an animal shelter with possible exposure to infectious organisms or zoonotic diseases (diseases of animals transmissible to humans), and cleaning chemicals. Daily exposure to high noise levels.

 

Qualifications:

·         High school diploma or equivalent

·         Customer service skills

·         No allergies to animals

·         Able to work with disinfectants and cleaning supplies

·         Valid Driver’s License or ID

·         Knowledge and experience of animal handling and behavior, minimum experience of 1 year

·         Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing

·         Computer skills including Excel

 

Physical Requirements:

Able to perform physical work: scrubbing, mopping, bending, lifting, controlling large dogs on a leash and walking and standing for up to 8 hours a day. Also, the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds with assistance.

·         Knowledge of animal breeds, behaviors and handling

·         General knowledge of animal health, able to identify illness

Primary Responsibilities:

Kennel and Cattery Areas

·         Ensures the well being and humane treatment of animals

·         Performs daily cleaning of kennels, cages and public areas while following the disease control protocol to ensure a safe and healthy environment

·         Spot cleans kennels and public areas throughout the day

·         Assures all animals are cared for regarding food, water, daily exercise and appropriate living conditions.

·         Monitors the health of animals and keeps shelter director informed of any animal behavior or health concerns

·         Assists with administering animal medication and treatments as directed

·         Maintains all necessary kennel records

·         Carries out implemented behavior and kennel enrichment or training programs

·         Maintain a healthy and calming environment for the animals in our care

·         Coordinates with animals trainers regarding special need animals

·         Assist with keeping Petfinder updated- making videos, taking pictures and uploading them to the website

·         Other duties as assigned

 

Animals Brought-in and Adoptions:

·         Provides general information to visiting patrons

·         Assist with adoptions, completes all necessary paperwork

·         Enter/Exit animal in yearly log

·         Make records for animal entering

·         Assist in conducting behavior assessments and health screening on incoming animals, determine what their status is while they are in our care

 

Administrative Duties:

·         Provide quality customer service

·         Answer phones, logging messages, return phone calls

·         Maintains and updates newspaper ads, Facebook and web page

·         Communicates with other community animal agencies and organizations regarding animal placement, environmental enrichment, etc.

·         Provides adoption counseling, provides support to those that have lost or found an animal or those coming to surrender an animal

·         Provides overall basic customer relations/customer service, answer questions

·         Serves as shelter contact person for animal behavior enrichment

·         Maintains numerous files, records and statistics

·         Follows all safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment

·         Assist with coordinating and organizing tours, meetings and volunteer groups

·         Assist with scheduling special events and off-site adoptions

·         Promote adoptions and seek ways to increase adoption rate

·         Educates client on responsible pet ownership and animal care

·         Processes necessary paperwork (adoption, surrenders, incoming and outgoing animals, and health record)

·         Actively promotes Rifle Animal Shelters programs and events

·         Solicits donations from clients, assists with accepting in-kind donations

·         Keeps service desk stocked and orderly

·         Meet regularly with the director to review procedures, discuss workplace issues and to share ideas and develop long range plans

·         Provides work schedule for volunteers and community service (assist with staff schedule)
