The Hiring Range for this position is: $17.66529 – $22.08162/Hourly
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Provides humane care, treatment and safe handling of animals in the shelter including feeding, cleaning, grooming, and enrichment
* Assists with the intake of animals and kenneling of all incoming shelter animals
* Performs initial physical exam of animals upon intake and veterinarian services tasks, administers vaccinations and performs data entry to update animal records
*Assists with kenneling and movement of animals and updates animal records to reflect movement
*Handles and moves animals and facilitates the interaction between animals and patrons upon intake process, release process or adoption process
*Monitors and maintains animal food and shelter supplies
*Fosters teamwork and provides assistance to division staff and volunteers
*Directs and provides guidance for community services workers and volunteers
*Assists with front office duties; greets, interacts with, and provides information to citizens on the Aurora Animal Services Division’s policies
*Meets with potential adopters to gather and give information to assist in the process of adoption
*Educates prospective adopters in adoption of suitable pet; reviews and completes adoption paperwork
*Observes animals for signs of disease or injury and assists in rechecking animals
*Performs euthanasia and related tasks
*Takes regular inventory of animals and reports discrepancies
*Maintains proper functioning and safety of kennel equipment; transports animals; drives, cleans, and maintains vehicles assigned to shelter
*Assists in janitorial and light maintenance duties
*Maintains grounds including pulling weeds and picking up trash
*Performs additional duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications & Working Conditions
Education:
*High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
*1 year of animal shelter or kennel environment experience
*Experience providing high level of customer service
*A combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements on a year-to-year basis.
Licenses:
*Driver’s License with a good driving record
Preferred Certification:
*Euthanasia
Knowledge:
*General knowledge of companion animal welfare, breeds, and species
Abilities:
*Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and citizens
*Handle difficult or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy
*Ability to complete work without close supervision, provide humane care and treatment for a variety of animals
*Perform euthanasia
*Operate a City vehicle

Physical Demands:
*Moderate to heavy physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 75 pounds
*Frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds

*Full range of body movements including bending, kneeling, stooping, pushing, pulling, climbing, and crawling
*Foot/eye coordination to operate motor vehicle
*Work performed in high noise level areas
*Exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal dander, and feces
Work Environment:
*Subject to animal bites or scratches
*Works primarily in an animal shelter with exposure to dust, noise, water, animal dangers, odors, and fumes
*Some work performed outdoors or offsite
*Able to work with rotating hours, holidays, weekends and a flexible schedule
Essential Personnel:
*When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Equipment Used:
*Operates a motor vehicle
*Uses a variety of hand tools and equipment common to kennel operations
*This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
