The Opportunity: Behavior and Health Coordinator
The Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s Animal Behavior and Health team is seeking a Behavior and Health Coordinator. The coordinator position is full-time, scheduled 30-40 hours per week, with a starting pay rate of $20.00 – $22.00 per hour. An additional $2.00 per hour is paid for hours worked on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays).

Each day, the coordinator is responsible for ensuring animals entering and residing at the animal shelter are cared for in a manner consistent with the Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s (HSBV’s) evaluation, rehabilitation, foster, adoption, and transfer programs. The coordinate gathers necessary health and behavior information about each animal to inform efficient adoption decisions. The coordinator also administers shelter animal vaccinations and helps coordinator other animal care efforts to achieve excellence in animal and client services for overall operations of HSBV’s shelter programs.

Behavior and Health Coordinators report directly to the Behavior and Health Supervisor and may also report to the Behavior and Health Manager. Coordinators work closely with the shelter veterinary technicians, training and behavior coordinators, shelter employees, and volunteers.

Summary of Duties
Animal Intake, Care, Evaluation, and Assessment

  • Monitors the shelter’s animal population in order to maintain the integrity of HSBV’s animal care programs. Alerts department manager to potential population crisis, disease epidemics, or other factors that may impact operations.
  • Assists clients when relinquishing animals to gather comprehensive and objective histories to aide in evaluation processes.
  • Evaluates new arrivals daily to assess adoptability and determine the next steps for care: adoption, foster care, medical care, transfer, behavior rehabilitation, or euthanasia.
  • Responsible for making adoption, euthanasia, transfer, and guardian reclaim decisions. Performs euthanasia.
  • Coordinates the housing of shelter animals relative to their health, behavior, and available resources on a daily basis.
  • Alerts staff veterinarians to animals requiring medical examinations or treatments. Administers vaccinations under the guidance of the staff veterinarians.
  • Maintains daily reports and medical records for shelter animals and performs computer data entry.
  • Practices disease control measures to ensure health of shelter animals; responsible for cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining dog exam, cat exam, and animal intake rooms on a daily basis.
  • Participates in training to learn or improve skills; receives and maintains certifications as required.

Program Support and Implementation

  • Identifies potential animal candidates for enrichment programs, and other programs designed for rehabilitation to alleviate stress within the shelter environment.
  • Supports the director of shelter services and the behavior and health manager by identifying animals in need of behavior checks; implements behavior plans as needed.
  • Recruits, schedules, and handles appointments with foster volunteers. Participates in foster volunteer training.
  • Manages transfer program by maintaining positive, cooperative relationships with transfer partners.
  • Occasionally travels to partner agencies to select and assist with transfer of animals; day trips and overnight trips may be required.

Staff Support and Training

  • Assists with the training of shelter staff, veterinary students, and volunteers as assigned and in alignment with HSBV safety practices, commitments and goals.
  • Trains staff for euthanasia certification.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains training curriculum on kennel operations and programs related to animal care.
  • Maintains positive, cooperative relationships across departments and the organization to promote a team effort in evaluating and managing each animal’s behavioral health, medical treatment, and growing animal enrichment programs. Departments include: Training and Behavior, Veterinary Hospital, Volunteer, and Shelter.

Animal and Client Services

  • Models quality service to both people and animal clients. Assists staff in situations requiring immediate problem solving; responds to animal needs.
  • Promotes good public relations in accordance with HSBV practices; gets involved in situations that could be potentially damaging to the professional image of HSBV.
  • Advises clients on HSBV programs & services; educates clients on animal welfare-related issues and referral programs.
  • Works cooperatively with animal welfare agencies, rescue groups, and others having regular interaction with the organization and particularly the shelter department. Contacts rescue groups regarding the transfer of animals.
  • Informs department manager of developments that may affect HSBV or the department including departmental progress, client concerns, and personnel issues.
  • Participates in animal care and adoption counseling as needed.

Experience and Education
One year of experience in animal health, care, or welfare and one year of customer service experience required. Demonstrated knowledge of small animal breeds strongly preferred. Must be willing to perform euthanasia of animals and the ability to become certified to perform euthanasia within two months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Intermediate skills in Windows environment including Microsoft Office. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills. Proactive in identifying and completing tasks with a high level of accuracy; detail oriented. Adaptable and able to multi-task in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Demonstrated ability to accurately read animal behavior and make decisions regarding the welfare of animals. Exercises good judgment when addressing the public, employee issues, and animal-related concerns. Able to maintain confidentiality. Working Conditions & Schedule
Work is performed in an animal kennel environment and office environment. Ten-hour shifts spent standing, walking, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting and lifting. Periodically required to drive shelter vehicles to select and assist with transfer of animals. The coordinator is regularly scheduled 8:00 am – 7:00 pm; 40 hours per week. Must be able to work weekends and holidays when needed. Employees are regularly scheduled to work at least one weekend day per week.

The anticipated pay rate for this position is $20.00 – $22.00 per hour. An additional $2.00 per hour is paid for hours worked on Saturday and Sunday. This salary range is the Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s estimate for this potion and actual compensation will be based on factors including but not limited to the depth and extent of relevant experience, education, and additional training/certifications for preferred skills.
