The Opportunity: Director of Veterinary Services  

The Humane Society of Boulder Valley (HSBV) seeks a Director of Veterinary Services to lead and oversee the organization’s veterinary hospital, veterinary services, programs, and operations. Our full-service veterinary practice provides quality, compassionate, and fear-free medical services to shelter animals and pets with guardians. Hospital revenues directly support HSBV’s mission by funding health care for shelter animals.

The director develops strategies and programs to ensure hospital services provide the highest quality of care and attention to animals, our clients, and our communities. The director is responsible for the overall operations of the hospital, ensuring hospital services meet the animal-related needs of the organization and the community while providing exceptional client service. The director supervises the chief veterinarians, the client service manager, and the patient services manager. The director assists the CEO with administration and management of HSBV to advance the goals and mission.

Position Summary:  

Organizational Leadership 

  • Acts as the veterinary liaison to actively meet the needs of the hospital’s largest client, the animal shelter. Promotes communication and cooperation between departments.
  • Advises, prepares, and actively contributes to the annual budgeting process, multi-year plans, and regularly addresses projected income and expenses.
  • Participates in the Strategic Planning Committee and completes assigned objectives; identifies key statistical metrics for program analysis and refinement.
  • Develops operational and long-range goals for the hospital and ensures they are aligned to the global ends or long-term objectives.
  • Advises the CEO in the formulation of department objectives, program direction, and business plans to ensure effective and sustainable operations.
  • Analyzes trends in veterinary medicine and hospital management; implements new veterinary programs and ensures quality of programs meets veterinary standards of care.
  • Rectifies financial problems and related issues that may arise between the veterinary hospital and its clients. Determines when and what special financial agreements are appropriate; ensures agreements are properly followed.
  • Provides direction and resolution for escalated client or personnel concerns.
  • Facilitates the cultivation of relationships with current and potential donors, community partners, and industry collaborators.
  • Represents HSBV at special events and animal welfare-related functions. Maintains professional relationships between HSBV and other animal welfare and veterinary organizations.

Veterinary Hospital Administration and Program Development

  • Responsible for the overall effectiveness of HSBV’s veterinary hospital operations while fostering a collaborative work environment within HSBV.
  • Develops budget estimates with input from veterinary management team; ensures financial goals are met and expense management is cost-effective.
  • Develops programs for the veterinary hospital to address evolving opportunities such as volunteer engagement, subsidized veterinary services, internships and student programs, and grants; oversees grant distribution as part of HSBV Safety Net Services.
  • Works with the chief veterinarians to ensure appropriate veterinary care is applied within commonly accepted veterinary standards and the tenets of socially conscious sheltering.
  • Ensures compliance with standards of care, medical record-keeping, and appropriate licensing of veterinary personnel.
  • Proactively engages with employees and volunteers to promote retention, performance development, and develops programs or events to maintain a culture of trust and collaboration.
  • With support from marketing and communications, develops plans to promote veterinary services.
  • With support from IT, ensures the hospital’s infrastructure, software, and other digital tools are current, effective, and secure.
  • Responsible for the administration of the veterinary software and related database (AVImark), veterinary online pharmacy (Covetrus), and client/patient retention software systems (PetDesk).

Qualifications: Bachelor’s or associate degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Minimum five years of successful management or supervisory experience. Five years of experience working with the public in a hospital or veterinary setting. Must be well-versed in fundamental business principles and have working exposure to business management including expense management. We will also consider any combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position’s duties. Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) credentials are helpful but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Successful candidate must possess obvious leadership qualities and supervisory abilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to model excellent customer service and be seen as a mentor to others to provide excellent customer service. Knowledge of animal health, care, and welfare. Excellent interpersonal skills; competencies in conflict management, excellent verbal and writing skills, and ability to present/speak in public. Exercises good judgment when addressing personnel, client, animal, or management issues. Demonstrated organizational and planning skills. Experience working in a dynamic, multi-task environment with resilience. Must be computer literate, able to work in Windows environment including MS Word and Excel. Knowledge of AVImark veterinary practice data management software helpful. What We Offer: The anticipated salary range for this position is $82,500 to $103,000 per year. This salary range is the Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s best estimate for this position and actual compensation will be based on factors including but not limited to the depth and extent of relevant experience, education, and additional training/certifications for preferred skills. Included in the compensation package:
