Shelter Supervisor

The Humane Society of Boulder Valley (HSBV) is seeking a Shelter Supervisor to help lead the daily operations of the animal shelter. The supervisor ensures quality animal and client care through training and coaching employees and volunteers, modeling excellent client service, and animal handling skills. The supervisor works collaboratively with the shelter managers to ensure assigned duties, tasks, and daily projects are fulfilled. The supervisor provides direct support to the client service resolution process, animal husbandry, and training and coaching shelter employees and volunteers.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Provides and models quality service to internal and external clients, assists staff in situations requiring immediate problem-solving.
  • Uses knowledge of HSBV’s programs, services, and resources to advise and educate about animal welfare best practices.
  • Promotes a safe and healthy workplace culture in compliance with regulatory standards, policies, and HSBV values.
  • Oversees and coordinates employee scheduling to meet operational needs.
  • Performs administrative tasks that support sales transactions, maintaining literature and resource materials, verifying the completion of adoption contracts and related documentation, and the development of workplace training materials and revision of written protocols.
  • Works collaboratively with the shelter managers and departmental leadership teams to identify program development or improvement opportunities, training needs, and cultivating relationships with current and potential partners and agencies.

Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; experience in animal welfare required. Minimum one-year customer service experience. Previous animal shelter and/or volunteer and staff oversight experience preferred. You must possess a Colorado driver’s license with an insurable driving record. Must be willing to perform humane euthanasia of animals and could be certified to perform humane euthanasia within six months of employment. A pre-employment background check and drug screen are required for all employment candidates.

Preferred skills and abilities
Effective communication and leadership skills. Ability to work in a dynamic, multi-task work environment. Meticulous and demonstrated leadership skills and enthusiasm necessary to motivate a professional and effective team. Exercises sound judgment when dealing with confidential information regarding the public, employee issues, and animal-related concerns. Able to lift fifty pounds with assistance and the ability to work a 10-hour shift while frequently standing, sitting, bending, and squatting.

What We Offer
The anticipated starting pay rate for this position is $24.00 per hour with an additional $2.00 per hour paid for hours worked on weekends. Additional compensation is available for qualified employees who can translate for our Spanish-speaking clientele. This pay rate is the Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s best estimate for this role and actual compensation will be based on factors including but not limited to the depth and extent of relevant experience, additional training/certifications for preferred skills, and education. ​Included in the compensation package:
