The Opportunity: Behavior and Health Coordinator

HSBV’s Animal Behavior and Health team is seeking to fill two Behavior and Health Coordinator roles. The coordinator position is full-time, scheduled 40 hours per week, with a starting pay range of $20.00 – $24.00 per hour. An additional $2.00 per hour is paid for hours worked on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). Applications will be accepted through Friday, June 13.
The coordinator is responsible for the daily care, evaluation, and coordination of potential outcomes for animals in the shelter environment. Core duties include monitoring the animal population, performing intake assessments, coordinating housing and vaccinations, maintaining accurate records, and identifying candidates for available care plans based on health and behavior observations. This role supports the behavior and rehabilitation programs, participates in decision-making regarding an animal’s candidacy for adoption, transfer, foster, and euthanasia. The coordinator also assists with training staff and volunteers in animal care procedure. In addition, the coordinator contributes to program development and upholds shelter protocols to ensure consistent, high-quality animal welfare practices that also align with socially conscious sheltering.
Behavior and Health Coordinators report directly to the Behavior and Health Manager and work closely with members of the veterinary hospital team, the training and behavior department, the foster and transfer coordinator, shelter employees, volunteers, and external partners and agencies.

Summary of Duties
Animal Admissions, Assessment, and Care
- Monitors the shelter’s animal population for health and behavior changes; alerts department managers to potential population crisis, disease epidemics, or other factors that may impact operations.
- Gathers comprehensive and objective histories from clients during animal intake to aid in the evaluation.
- Evaluates new animal arrivals daily to determine candidacy for the adoption program and determines care or program options that may include adoption, foster care, medical care, transfer, behavior rehabilitation, guardian reclaim or euthanasia.
- Responsible for making the decisions for adoption, euthanasia, transfer, and guardian reclaims. Performs euthanasia of shelter animals as needed.
- Coordinates shelter animal housing relative to their health, behavior, and resources available daily.
- Alerts staff veterinarians to animals requiring medical examinations or treatments. Administers vaccinations under the guidance of the staff veterinarians.
- Maintains daily reports and medical records for shelter animals and performs computer data entry.
- Practices disease control measures to ensure health of shelter animals; responsible for cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining dog exam, cat exam, and animal intake rooms daily.
Program Support and Implementation
- Identifies potential animal candidates for enrichment programs, and other programs designed for rehabilitation to alleviate stress within the shelter environment.
- Supports the director of shelter services and the behavior and health manager by identifying animals in need of behavior checks; implements behavior plans as needed.
- Assists the Foster and Transfer Coordinator with recruitment, scheduling, and communication with foster volunteers. Participates in foster volunteer training.
- Occasionally travel to partner agencies to select and assist with the transfer of animals; day trips and overnight trips may be required.
- Assists with the training of shelter staff, veterinary students, and volunteers as assigned.
- Assists with training shelter employees for euthanasia certification.

Qualifications
Experience and Education
One year of experience in animal health, care, or welfare and one year of customer service experience required. Demonstrated knowledge of small animal breeds strongly preferred. Must be willing to perform euthanasia of animals and become certified to perform euthanasia within two months of employment. A background check and drug screen are required of all employment candidates.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Intermediate skills in Windows environment including Microsoft Office. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills. Demonstrated ability to actively identify and complete tasks with accuracy and diligence. Adaptable and able to multi-task in a dynamic, collaborative environment. Demonstrated ability to accurately read animal behavior and make decisions regarding the welfare of animals. Exercises good judgment when addressing the public, employee issues, and animal-related concerns. Able to maintain confidentiality. Working Conditions & Schedule
Work is performed in an animal kennel environment and office environment. Ten-hour shifts spent standing, walking, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, and lifting. Periodically required to drive shelter vehicles to select and assist with the transfer of animals. The coordinator is regularly scheduled 8:00 am – 7:00 pm; 40 hours per week. You must be able to work weekends and holidays when needed. Employees are regularly scheduled to work at least one weekend day per week.

The anticipated pay rate for this position is $20.00 – $24.00 per hour. An additional $2.00 per hour is paid for hours worked on Saturday and Sunday. This salary range is the Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s estimate for this potion and actual compensation will be based on factors including but not limited to the depth and extent of relevant experience, education, and additional training/certifications for preferred skills.
