Job Summary

Oversees day-to-day operations of the patient care and foster care teams. Supervises staff to ensure effective and efficient operations of all programs. Provides oversight and management of shelter medicine and foster protocols. Ensures a high standard of care for all animals housed in medical and foster kennels. Responsible for all supply and medication ordering to include inventory tracking and managing multiple vendor accounts. Monitors and manages the medical animal population and our capacity for care.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directs and organizes all aspects of the patient care and foster care teams to ensure efficient and effective operations with all programs.
  • Schedules staff in patient care and foster care programs, delegating tasks, when necessary, to ensure operations are covered 7 days per week.
  • Ensures medical documentation, records, and kennels are compliant with PACFA regulations.
  • Confirms protocol compliance in patient care and foster care programs. This includes safety protocols, medical management of all ill and injured animals, triage procedures, after-hours care, and medical documentation.
  • Assists with client complaints, volunteer issues, claim calls, and euthanasia approvals. Ensures clients and volunteers are treated with respect and professionalism by all staff.
  • Works with the Pueblo Shelter Vet Services Manager at the Pueblo shelter and Transfer Coordinators at both shelter locations to coordinate transfers of medical and foster animals between shelters for medical procedures and/or placement in foster homes.
  • Monitors and manages the medical and foster animal population, working with DVMs to create and implement treatment plans. Evaluates our capacity for care and assists with adoption and euthanasia decisions when necessary.
  • Ensures all medical/foster animals are provided with quality care and are humanely managed at all times.
  • Performs and/or oversees participation in rounds for medical and foster animals, ensuring their needs are being met in the shelter. Reports concerning behavior to the Behavior team.
  • Monitors time animals are waiting for foster placement, works to ensure timely placement.
  • Monitors teams chats and email, responding to medical questions from other departments.
  • Works with marketing and communications to recruit and retain new foster families.
  • Oversees all medical and supply inventory, ordering when necessary. Approves and codes invoices for accounting in a timely manner.
  • Works with Chief Veterinarian and other Vet Services managers to ensure controlled substances are inventoried, ordered, and properly documented and stored upon arrival.
  • Assists Director and other Vet Services managers with vendor negotiations and pricing.
  • Assists with oversight of the extern program with the other Vet Services managers.
  • Oversees volunteers in Patient Care and Foster Care teams. Addresses concerns, manages schedule, and assigns appropriate duties and training.
  • Develops and monitors program budgets with a goal to maximize resources.
  • Communicates with outside veterinary practices related to special cases.
  • Conducts and participates in meetings with staff, other managers, and DVMs to review procedures, address concerns, and implement solutions.
  • Arranges training opportunities for staff, providing time to complete their CE requirements.

Supervisory Duties

  • Hires, supervises and evaluates direct reports in the performance of their job responsibilities.
  • Coaches staff by providing ongoing feedback and timely performance evaluations.
  • Sets performance standards, directs and motivates employees.
  • Consults with Human Resources regarding discipline and terminations.
  • Ensures adequate staffing levels are maintained.
  • Communicates safety requirements to staff.
  • Coordinates on-the-job training for staff, volunteers and externs.
  • Answers general questions dealing with veterinary care of animals.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly sits at computer station.
  • Must be able to lift, push, and pull a minimum of forty pounds with reasonable accommodations.
  • Must be able to be on feet for extended periods of time.
  • Typically stands, bends, stoops and crouches.
  • Consistently exposed to animals in the workplace and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available.
  • Periodically drives a HSPPR Vehicle to perform duties

Schedule Requirements

Five (5) days a week, Eight (8) hours a day. Schedule may include evening, weekend, and holiday work.

Education/Experience Necessary

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological science such as biology, zoology, etc., or an Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited institution preferred.
  • Current Veterinary Technician license preferred.
  • Two years prior experience in a full-service veterinary clinic or animal shelter environment.
  • Minimum one year of supervisory experience.
  • Experience treating sick or critically ill patients. Ability to train staff in these techniques.
  • Computer literate in Windows, excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Good organizational and planning skills.
